The test took place at 5:29 a.m. Mountain War Time on July 16, 1945, as part of the Manhattan Project. J. Robert Oppenheimer gave it the code name Trinity, and Kenneth Bainbridge directed the test. The device, nicknamed the Gadget, was a plutonium implosion bomb of the same design as the Fat Man bomb used on Nagasaki, yielding about 25 kilotons of TNT. The site was designated a National Historic Landmark district on December 21, 1965.
