Construction began in 1967. Unit 1 was a 508 MWe carbon dioxide-cooled, graphite-moderated gas reactor modeled on the French UNGG design, and it was connected to the grid on 6 May 1972. On 19 October 1989 a fire damaged a turbogenerator and impaired safety functions, an event later rated level 3 on the International Nuclear Event Scale. Unit 1 was permanently shut down on 31 July 1990. Unit 2 is a 1,087 MWe pressurized water reactor, connected to the grid on 12 December 1987.
