About This Site

?
Written by NukeWorker from public records: facts that do not change. Operator, status and capacity come from the live data elsewhere on this page. Zheleznogorsk, known until the 1990s as the closed city Krasnoyarsk-26, lies on the Yenisei River in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. The Mining and Chemical Combine there was established in 1950 to produce weapons-grade plutonium. Its reactors, radiochemical plant and other facilities were built in tunnels 200 to 250 meters inside a granite mountain.

Three graphite-moderated reactors patterned on the American Hanford reactors were built there and cooled with water from the Yenisei. The AD reactor started in 1958, ADE-1 in 1961, and ADE-2 in December 1963. Two of the three reactors were shut down in 1992. The last, ADE-2, was shut down in April 2010 under the 1997 plutonium agreement between Russia and the United States. In September 2014 the MOX fuel production line there completed a 10 kilogram batch.
